Paris — Indian javelin thrower Sumit Antil delivered a record-breaking performance at the Paris Paralympics on September 2, capturing his second consecutive gold medal and setting new standards in the sport. Entering the competition as the favorite, Antil exceeded expectations by breaking his own Paralympic record twice within a single session.
Record-Breaking Throws Highlight Dominance
Antil, who previously held the Paralympics javelin record with a throw of 68.55 meters from the Tokyo Games, started strong with his opening throw of 69.11 meters in Paris. This initial attempt not only surpassed his former record but also set the tone for a remarkable performance. He continued to impress with his second throw, which reached an astounding 70.59 meters, once again breaking his own record and solidifying his lead.
His subsequent throws maintained his high level of performance: 66.66 meters on the third attempt, and a foul on the fourth. Antil recovered with a fifth throw of 69.04 meters, ensuring his gold medal position. His final throw measured 66.57 meters, capping off a dominant showing and confirming his superiority in the event.
Late Challenge from Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku
Although Sumit Antil faced some competition from Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku, who made a late push, Kodithuwakku’s efforts did not threaten Antil’s commanding lead. Antil’s standout throw of 70.59 meters was the highlight of the event, ensuring his victory.
Sandeep and Sanjay Sandip Sargar’s Performance
India’s other competitors in the javelin event, Sandeep and Sanjay Sandip Sargar, finished in fourth and seventh place, respectively. Sandeep’s best throw was 62.80 meters, achieved on his third attempt, while Sanjay’s top effort was 58.03 meters on his third try.
Medal Tally Boosted
Sumit Antil’s gold medal has significantly contributed to India’s overall medal tally at the Paralympics, which now stands at 14 medals—three gold, five silver, and six bronze—on Day 5 of the Games. Antil’s outstanding performance not only highlights his individual excellence but also underscores India’s rising prominence in Paralympic sports, setting a high benchmark for future athletes.
