Noah Dines has shattered the record for the most vertical feet skied in a year without a chairlift, surpassing two and a half million feet this week. The achievement, reached on September 2 at Chile’s El Colorado ski resort, now holds the title previously held by Aaron Rice. Dines was accompanied by friends, including professional skier Parkin Costain and filmmaker Patrick Conroy, who enhanced the memorable ascent.
“It was a pretty special moment,” Dines remarked. “It was really fun,” particularly enjoying the experience with Costain and witnessing his skiing prowess.
Dines began his ambitious year-long journey on January 1, 2024, in Stowe, Vermont, tackling the region’s slopes despite their modest size. “It was actually super efficient,” he noted, reflecting on his successful first month. From there, he traversed the globe, skiing in locations such as Saint Gervais, France; Innsbruck, Austria; and now South America. He plans to return to Stowe by late October or early November to complete the year.
Despite achieving such a remarkable feat, Dines’ athletic background is relatively ordinary. He skied occasionally growing up in Boston, ran track and cross country, and played JV soccer in high school. His passion for ski touring ignited after he began using a telemark setup in Maine, leading him to fall in love with the sport.
At 30, Dines attributes his success to a continuous progression and deep commitment to ski touring. “I want to know what it feels like to fully invest in one thing,” he explained, describing his record attempt as an exploration of his limits.
Dines skis almost daily, with minimal breaks primarily for travel. He focuses on efficient, manageable terrain, skiing alone in lower avalanche risk areas. To support his all-consuming schedule, he relies on savings, sponsorships, and a GoFundMe campaign, with support from brands like Fischer Skis, Maloja Clothing, and Plink.
