Caleb Wu, a 22-year-old soccer player from Hartford, Connecticut, has set a new world record for the most alternating football (soccer) touches with the feet on a treadmill in 30 seconds, achieving a total of 75 touches. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in Wu’s life, which has been profoundly shaped by his personal struggles and triumphs.
Wu, who has battled severe depression and racism, credits soccer with helping him overcome these challenges. His journey began in the throes of a debilitating bout of depression, from which he says sport provided a vital escape and a path to recovery.
“I always had a passion for soccer and engaged in a lot of juggling tricks and freestyle,” Wu explained. “When my teammates showed me a video of someone failing to perform this task on a treadmill, I took it as a personal challenge and wanted to prove them wrong.”
His record-breaking attempt was not just about the achievement itself but also a testament to his resilience. “When I was younger, I nearly took my own life, and I wanted to make the most of my abilities to show myself and others that I could accomplish great things,” Wu said.
Throughout his formative years, Wu faced racial stereotypes and discrimination, with classmates often undermining his athletic abilities. “I wanted to defy the stereotypes that Asians are only good at math and prove myself as a capable athlete,” he shared. His perseverance led him to play college soccer for four years, serve as team captain, and become the first sponsored Division 3 athlete and college soccer player.
Wu attributes his recovery and success to a combination of passion, supportive parents, and faith. “I’m grateful for the support system I had, especially my parents who were understanding and did not put undue pressure on me,” he said. “Turning to faith also played a crucial role in navigating my toughest times.”
Currently working as a healthcare account executive and a merchandise associate for the pro soccer team Hartford Athletic, Wu expressed a mix of nervousness and excitement during his record attempt. When he learned he had officially broken the record, he excitedly shared the news with his colleagues.
Wu’s story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating how passion and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements and personal growth.
