Ballymena, NI — A new record price for a Limousin heifer has been set at the Northern Ireland Limousin Cattle Club’s Ladies in Red show and sale, with a heifer selling for 25,000 guineas. The record-breaking sale took place on September 6, 2024, at Ballymena and was sponsored by Norbrook.
The heifer, named Hollowdene Ulay, was exhibited by first-time exhibitor William Gabbie from Crossgar, Co. Down. Ulay, who secured the reserve intermediate championship before the sale, was praised by Scottish judge Stephanie Dick as a “great example of the breed,” noting her “big top, square plates, and lovely head.” Hollowdene Ulay, sired by Claddagh McCabe, was bred from Norman Lacey, purchased for 5,500 guineas in Carlisle seven years ago, and has NT821 and Q204X myostatin genes.
The heifer was bought by Mary Cormack for her Rougemont Herd in Hereford. The sale, conducted by Harrison and Hetherington in conjunction with JA McClelland and Sons, saw strong competition with three heifers achieving five-figure prices and five exported to England, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland.
James McKay of Maghera also achieved significant results, with his nine-month-old Ampertaine Ujlo ET selling for 20,000 guineas to Tony and Jo Smith for the Smithy Herd in Cornwall. Ampertaine Ujlo ET, sired by Whinfellpark Lomu and bred from Ampertaine Jlo, is a maternal sister to the 38,000-guinea Ampertaine Foreman.
The intermediate championship and reserve supreme award went to Kieran McCrory’s Bernish Uptowngirl ET, which sold for 19,000 guineas. This heifer joins the Collegeland Herd owned by Thomas Clancy from Moy, Co. Tyrone.
Other notable sales included Bernish Pippa ET, sold for 6,500 guineas to Raymond Savage and Louise Cowan for their Aghadolgan Herd, and Drumhilla Utopia, which achieved 8,000 guineas and was purchased by Malachy Byrne for the Lurgankeel Herd.
