Cornwall native Cody Taylor has achieved a remarkable feat by setting the fastest known time for running the 900-kilometre Bruce Trail unsupported, completing the journey in just 14 days and 30 minutes.
Taylor’s accomplishment surpasses the previous record held by Jamieson Hatt, who completed the trail in 14 days, five hours, and 20 minutes in 2022. Taylor’s record has been officially recognized on fastestknowntime.com, featuring an interactive map tracking his progress.
Taylor embarked on his record-breaking run from south to north along the Bruce Trail, which spans from Niagara to Tobermory. Carrying all his food and gear, Taylor started with a 52-pound backpack. He endured diverse and challenging conditions, including rugged terrain, steep inclines, and varying weather such as rain, heat, and cool temperatures.
In a recent YouTube video, Taylor humorously shared, “I still can’t feel my feet and it has been over a week. It was insane…” He also revealed the intense nature of his final stretch, running almost 150 kilometers over two nights without sleep and running out of food.
Taylor’s journey to this record began with his encounter with ultrarunner Ray Zahab in the Atacama Desert, Chile, in November 2023. Zahab’s encouragement and support played a crucial role in Taylor’s preparation for the Bruce Trail. Taylor trained extensively in the Adirondack Mountains before setting out on the trail.
Reflecting on his experience, Taylor said, “Get to the end, finish up: it’s the most beautiful experience ever.” He was joined at the finish by his family, expressing profound gratitude and joy despite the grueling effort.
Looking ahead, Taylor is focused on his business, New Normal, which he co-owns with his wife, Franny. He remains appreciative of the support from his community and is committed to giving back, including participating in charity runs for local causes.
“I love my city, Cornwall. Everyone’s supporting us and we love giving back,” Taylor said. “Life is good, and I’m just really happy and grateful.”
