On September 6, the dry bulk vessel Helios, operated by HGK Shipping, achieved a new Guinness World Record for its solar panel installation, marking a global milestone in sustainable maritime technology. The Helios is distinguished by its 312 solar panels, installed by the clean-tech start-up Wattlab, which are unique to inland waterway vessels.
The record-setting achievement was officially recognized during the World Port Days event in Rotterdam. The event, held at the city’s center, featured key project partners HGK Shipping, Blommaert, and Wattlab, alongside local dignitaries.
The solar panel system on the Helios significantly enhances its environmental performance, reducing onboard CO2 emissions by up to 90 tonnes annually. The vessel itself measures 135 meters in length and 11.45 meters in width, with a cargo hold capacity of 5,570 cubic meters, making it suitable for transporting goods such as rapeseed for the global food and agricultural leader ADM.
The Helios’ cargo hold is covered by 27 hatch covers, equipped with solar panels manufactured by Blommaert. These panels generate approximately 90 MWh of electricity each year, which powers the vessel’s onboard operations and contributes to its annual CO2 savings.
Carl Saville, an official representative from Guinness World Records Limited, presented the world record certificate during the World Port Days celebration. Rotterdam’s alderperson, Chantal Zeegers, attended the ceremony to represent the city.
