Disney’s latest streaming series, “Percy Jackson & the Olympians,” has made an impressive entry into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, securing the fourth position on the Originals list with 572 million minutes viewed. The series, which premiered on December 19, released only the first two 40-minute episodes during the December 18-24 viewing window. Despite having just 80 available minutes for viewing, it performed competitively against established shows like “Reacher” (520 minutes), “The Crown” (3,424 minutes), and “My Life with the Walter Boys” (446 minutes). It’s worth noting that Nielsen considers minutes viewed across all episodes when ranking series.
Peacock’s “Dr. Death” also marked its debut on the Originals chart, entering at No. 8 with 302 million minutes viewed across all 16 episodes. Peacock released all eight episodes of the second season of “Dr. Death” during this interval. The audience for “Dr. Death” skewed slightly older, with one-third of viewers aged 35-49 and nearly half aged 50+. Additionally, 68% of the audience identified as female.
“Reacher” maintained its stronghold on the second position, recording almost 1.2 billion minutes viewed in its first full week of streaming, even though the fourth episode of the second season was not included in this week’s interval.
“Young Sheldon” reclaimed the top spot on the chart, regaining its No. 1 position after being displaced by “Leave the World Behind” in the last two rankings. Across Max and Netflix, the licensed pickup garnered 1.4 billion minutes viewed in its fifth week on the streaming platform, while “Leave the World Behind” slipped to the fourth position with 983 million minutes.
Netflix’s critically acclaimed “The Crown” secured the third position this week, accumulating 1.14 billion minutes, a slight increase from last week’s fourth place ranking, despite a small drop in minutes viewed.
With the holiday season in full swing, Christmas films experienced a resurgence on the Films chart. Classics like “Elf” (862 million), “Home Alone” (836 million), “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (700 million), and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (649 million) made a comeback. The first two films also secured positions on the overall chart at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. Additionally, new Christmas film “Candy Cane Lane” continued to perform well, picking up 597 million minutes viewed.
Rounding out the Top 10 on the chart were “Rebel Moon: Part 1” (966 million), “Bluey” (925 million), “Grey’s Anatomy” (908 million), and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (730 million). Nielsen’s streaming report continues to offer valuable insights into the dynamic landscape of streaming content consumption.
