In a stunning turn of events, Taylor Swift has overtaken Beyoncé as the all-time leader in MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) wins, capping a whirlwind 24 hours that included endorsing Kamala Harris for President of the United States.
Entering the 2024 VMAs with 23 Moon Persons already secured, Swift was three awards short of Beyoncé’s record 26. With 12 nominations this year, including the prestigious Artist of the Year, Swift was poised to make a significant impact.
True to form, Swift not only matched but exceeded expectations, clinching seven additional Moon Persons and setting a new record with a total of 30 VMA wins.
Throughout the three-hour ceremony, Swift delivered several heartfelt acceptance speeches. Her first, upon winning Best Collaboration, paid tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001. “Waking up this morning in New York on September 11, I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago, everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost,” she said. “That is the most important thing about today, and everything that happens tonight falls behind that.”
In her final speech of the evening, Swift celebrated her Video of the Year award with a special mention of her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic, so I want to thank him,” she said. She also used the platform to encourage fans aged 18 and over to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Swift’s record-setting night at the VMAs solidifies her status as one of the most influential figures in contemporary music, following a series of high-profile endorsements and personal achievements.
