Mary Yongai, a 26-year-old makeup artist from Sierra Leone, has shattered a 19-year-old world record for the most cosmetic makeovers in 24 hours, completing an impressive 111 makeovers. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 96 set by Indonesia’s Martha Tilaar in 2005.
Mary’s record attempt took place in Freetown, where a lively crowd, including local celebrities and government officials, cheered her on. Adhering to strict guidelines, each makeover involved a comprehensive application of makeup, including concealer, foundation, eye shadow, and more.
During the grueling 24-hour challenge, Mary took only a single 20-minute break, opting to skip meals and bathroom breaks, surviving on soft drinks and “the grace of God.” The celebration erupted once she completed her final makeover, though the overwhelming excitement caused her to faint momentarily.
Inspired by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cook-a-thon, Mary dedicated weeks to practice with friends and family, eventually completing 48 makeovers in an eight-hour trial run. Her journey is not just a personal victory; she hopes to motivate others to pursue their dreams, stating, “Achieving this record is a dream come true.”
