At just 11 years old, Oakville native Cydnee Abbott has etched her name into the prestigious Guinness World Records for her remarkable athleticism. Abbott now holds the record for the most full-body revolutions in a backbend position, achieving 28 spins in one minute.
This accomplishment will be highlighted in the 2025 edition of the Guinness World Records, adding to Abbott’s growing international recognition after her 2023 performance on Canada’s Got Talent, where she wowed millions with her flexibility and dance skills.
Abbott’s love for dance began early. “I started dancing when I was 2 years old, and I’ve been dancing ever since,” Abbott shared with Oakville News. However, it was during the COVID-19 lockdown that she discovered her extraordinary flexibility. “I would experiment in the basement, watch social media, and try to replicate moves I saw, putting my own spin on them,” she explained.
Her commitment to mastering her craft paid off. With over nine years of gymnastics training and a background in dance, Abbott has worked to distinguish herself from other performers. She eventually earned the opportunity to appear on Canada’s Got Talent, where she performed a solo routine that left a lasting impression.
Abbott’s Canada’s Got Talent performance soon went viral, with a TikTok clip of her routine amassing an astonishing 50 million views. This newfound fame opened doors for Abbott, leading to an invitation to Italy in January 2024 to attempt breaking the Guinness World Record for full-body revolutions in a backbend.
The previous record, held by South Africa’s Zama Mofokeng at 19 revolutions, was shattered when Abbott completed 28. Reflecting on her achievement, she said, “It felt amazing. Everyone was so kind and helpful. Breaking the record and being featured in the 2025 Guinness World Record Book is truly a dream come true.”
Achieving such a feat wasn’t easy. Abbott credits her success to relentless practice and determination. “It took a lot of time, dedication, and extra stretches to get it right. I had to figure out whether to rotate right or left during my spins,” she explained.
The full-body revolutions in a backbend position, described by Abbott as a “dance-acro trick,” is a move she had practiced extensively prior to the record attempt. This trick, which combines elements of dance and acrobatics, showcases both her flexibility and strength.
While basking in the glory of her recent success, Abbott hinted at bigger things to come. “I might have a few things in my back pocket,” she teased. Looking ahead, Abbott aspires to pursue a career in dance and acrobatics, aiming to push her limits even further. “I want to keep ranking up and make this a profession,” she added.
Abbott’s remarkable achievement not only highlights her individual talent and dedication but also shines a spotlight on her hometown of Oakville. She has become a local sensation, proudly representing her community on the world stage.
The 2025 edition of the Guinness World Record Book, featuring Cydnee Abbott’s record-breaking feat, became available for purchase on September 12, 2024, both online and in stores.
