Lionel Messi is on the verge of setting two significant records with Inter Miami, despite a season marked by injuries. The 37-year-old is close to becoming the team’s all-time leading scorer and top assist provider, feats that seem inevitable given his form since joining the club in July 2023.
Messi, currently with 47 goal involvements in 35 appearances, is only three goals shy of surpassing Leo Campana’s record of 32 goals. Campana recently overtook Gonzalo Higuaín’s 29-goal tally, but Messi is poised to set a new benchmark either in the final regular season match against the New England Revolution or during the postseason, provided he remains injury-free.
In addition to his goalscoring prowess, Messi is just one assist behind Inter Miami’s assist leader, Robert Taylor, who has 18 assists in 107 appearances. With Messi sitting at 17 assists in significantly fewer matches, it seems likely he will soon claim this record as well. Former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba is also in the mix, with 15 assists, but Messi appears on track to dominate both categories.
This pursuit of individual records coincides with Inter Miami’s historic push to break the MLS single-season points record. On October 19, Miami faces the New England Revolution, needing just three more points to surpass the Revolution’s 2021 record of 73 points.
As Messi continues his remarkable form, his contribution to the team’s success could cement his legacy with the club, potentially making these records untouchable before he retires.
