Tomas Martin Etcheverry made history on Friday by defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in the longest match ever recorded at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The Argentine secured a hard-fought victory with a scoreline of 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 after an intense battle that lasted three hours and 43 minutes, allowing him to advance to the third round.
This marathon match eclipsed the previous record set last year, when Marton Fucsovics triumphed over Felix Auger-Aliassime in three hours and 23 minutes during the second round. Before that, the record belonged to Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, who played for three hours and 21 minutes in the championship match in 2012.
With this victory, the No. 31 seed Etcheverry improved his head-to-head record against van de Zandschulp to 2-0. In the next round, he is set to face either World No. 1 Jannik Sinner or Japan’s Taro Daniel.
