Ratan Tata, who served as the chairman of the Tata Group for over two decades, leaves behind a formidable legacy characterized by strong leadership and a commitment to social responsibility. Known informally as RNT within the Tata Group, Tata was appointed as the successor to J.R.D. Tata in 1990.
During his early years in leadership, Mr. Tata encountered significant resistance from several influential executives who controlled large segments of the conglomerate. By the mid-1990s, he successfully navigated this challenge, positioning the Tata Group as an international powerhouse and enhancing its global stature.
The Tata legacy began with Jamsetji Tata, the visionary founder who laid the groundwork for the group’s ventures in sectors such as textiles and steel. Jamsetji was married to Heerabai Daboo and fathered three children: Sir Dorabji Tata, Dhunbai Tata, and Sir Ratan Tata (senior). The elder Ratan Tata wed Navjbai Sett and later adopted Naval H. Tata.
Naval Tata, in turn, married Sonoo Commissariat and had two sons, Ratan N. Tata and Jimmy N. Tata. Naval Tata also married Simone Tata, with whom he had a son, Noel Tata.
Noel Tata is Ratan Tata’s half-brother. He is married to Aloo Mistry, sister of the late Cyrus Mistry, who previously held the position of chairman at the Tata Group. Together, Noel and Aloo are parents to three children: Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata.
The Tata family continues to play a significant role in shaping the business landscape of India, maintaining a commitment to innovation, leadership, and philanthropy.
