On Saturday, nearly 1,700 students, ranging in age from 12 to 67, gathered at the University of Lisbon’s IST School of Technology to establish a new Guinness World Record for the largest computer programming lesson held in a single venue. The previous record was set in Dallas, Texas, where 724 participants took part in a similar event on October 31, 2016.
According to Guinness World Records adjudicator Paulina Sapinska, the final count revealed a total of 1,668 participants.
The event’s organizers aimed to highlight Portugal’s emergence as a burgeoning hub for information technology while also promoting the importance of computer literacy. IST chief Rogerio Colaco emphasized that understanding computing today is as essential as reading and writing was a century ago. He noted, “Everyone must know a little bit about computer science and programming to live in the present world.”
