While most of us associate flights with long hours in the sky, there’s a unique journey in Scotland that takes just one and a half minutes. Operated by Loganair, this incredibly short flight connects the Orkney Islands of Westray and Papa Westray.
The actual flying time can be even less than a minute, with the fastest recorded flight taking only 53 seconds, a record set by pilot Stuart Linklater, according to The Mirror. Covering a distance of about 1.7 miles across water, this flight is shorter than the runway at Edinburgh Airport, Scotland’s capital.
The flight is part of a triangular route, with a stop in Kirkwall, providing essential transportation for the residents of Papa Westray, an island with a population of around 70 people. Loganair uses Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander aircraft, which can seat up to 10 passengers, and those in the front row can even watch the pilot in action during the brief flight.
Although the flight is famous for its brevity, it offers passengers a unique experience. The Orkney Islands are known for their rugged beauty, historical sites, and slower pace of life, providing a serene escape from busier parts of the world. What this flight lacks in duration, it more than makes up for in the lasting memories it creates, whether for locals or tourists seeking an unusual travel experience.
