Former Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has named Moises Caicedo the best midfielder in the Premier League this season, highlighting the Ecuadorian’s remarkable performances since joining the club. Caicedo has made a significant impact, including a standout display at Anfield where he assisted Nicolas Jackson’s goal, solidifying his position as a key player for Chelsea.
Having joined Chelsea from Brighton for a British record fee of £115 million in 2023, Caicedo has demonstrated a marked improvement under the guidance of Enzo Maresca. After initially struggling to adapt to his new environment, he has now emerged as a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s strong start to the season. Notably, he was the only Chelsea player to complete two through balls during the match against Liverpool.
Petit emphasized Caicedo’s versatility and skill, stating, “I think he has certainly been the best midfielder in the league this season. I don’t like even calling him a holding midfielder as he’s so much better than that. For me, he’s a modern midfielder and definitely one of the best players this season.”
While Petit’s praise is noteworthy, it’s worth mentioning the impressive performances of Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, who has also made a strong start to the season.
The partnership between Caicedo and fellow midfielder Romeo Lavia has been particularly promising, raising expectations among fans for their continued collaboration. Enzo Maresca has shown a willingness to make bold decisions, as evidenced by his choice to bench Enzo Fernandez at Anfield, suggesting he may explore different lineups to optimize the team’s performance.
Caicedo is expected to sit out Thursday’s Conference League match against Panathinaikos but will likely return to the starting lineup as Chelsea aims to secure a victory against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.
