ATHERTON, Calif. – Atherton, a small town in the Bay Area, has once again secured its position as the most expensive zip code in the United States, according to Property Shark’s annual rankings. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Atherton has claimed this distinction, despite a slight dip in its median home sale price.
In 2024, Atherton’s median home sale price stands at $7.9 million, reflecting a 5% decrease, or $400,000, compared to the previous year. This decline contrasts with the broader trend observed among the 100 most expensive zip codes, where 69% experienced rising prices.
California continues to dominate the luxury real estate market, particularly in the Bay Area, which boasts 39 of the nation’s most costly zip codes. Although the area has seen fluctuations in recent years, it remains the most expensive metropolitan region in the country, as noted by researchers.
Southern California is also home to several exclusive zip codes. Among counties, Los Angeles leads with 18 of the top zip codes, while Santa Clara County follows closely behind with 16.
Notably, Newport Beach has made a significant impact, securing three positions in the top 10 most expensive zip codes—a remarkable feat. Overall, California overwhelmingly outpaces other states, contributing 80 of the 121 zip codes listed in the top 100, with New York State trailing far behind at just 19.
