SAFEEN Group’s all-electric tug has set a new Guinness World Records title, marking a significant achievement in the maritime industry. The record, which was officially announced at the ADIPEC energy event, was established at AD Ports Group’s Khalifa Port by measuring the tug’s high peak strength through bollard pull.
The tug recorded an impressive average high peak pull of 78.2 tonnes, setting a global milestone for electric vessels. AD Ports Group highlighted that this eco-friendly tug, which produces zero emissions from “Tank to Propeller,” not only contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of marine operations but also offers a more cost-effective alternative to traditional diesel-powered vessels, thanks to lower maintenance costs.
Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster at AD Ports Group, expressed his pride in the accomplishment: “This Guinness World Record achievement proves that the shift to alternative energy sources does not compromise performance. We are extremely proud that the Middle East’s first electric tug has gained international recognition while simultaneously enhancing the sustainability of our operations. This tug is now an integral part of our Marine Services fleet and plays a key role in our electrification strategy.”
The electric tug, which was trialed at Khalifa Port, has now entered permanent service. It features an advanced electric hybrid battery system, and future plans include the installation of shore power to further enhance its environmental credentials.
Arnout Damen, CEO of Damen Shipyards Group, commented on the collaboration: “Damen is extremely proud to partner with SAFEEN Group on this groundbreaking electric tug project. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to advancing sustainability in the maritime industry.”
In early 2024, SAFEEN Group and Damen Shipyards formalized an agreement for the lease and purchase of the all-electric tug. At the time, Al Shaiba emphasized the importance of the vessel, stating, “Introducing electric tugs into our fleet supports both our local and global goals for greener maritime operations. AD Ports Group is dedicated to a sustainable future, and adopting such technologies is crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector.”
With this milestone, SAFEEN Group’s electric tug has not only set a record but also underscored the growing importance of sustainable technologies in the global shipping industry.
