Charlotte, NC — A new study from LendingTree has placed North Carolina among the worst driving states in the U.S., ranking it as the sixth worst overall. The annual report, which analyzes driving incidents from November 2023 to November 2024, evaluates factors such as collisions, DUIs, speeding violations, and citations.
The study, based on tens of millions of insurance inquiries, calculated the number of driving incidents per 1,000 drivers across all states. North Carolina reported 39.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers, which placed it near the bottom of the rankings.
Key Findings:
DUIs: North Carolina ranked as the third worst state for DUI offenses, with 2.9 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. This statistic was particularly alarming compared to the top-ranked state, Illinois, which recorded just 0.4 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.
Collisions: The state also ranked No. 6 for the highest rate of collisions, with 26.4 crashes per 1,000 drivers. This figure is far higher than Arkansas, which had the lowest collision rate at 8.2 per 1,000 drivers.
Despite these high rankings in key categories, North Carolina did not make it to the top five in any major driving incident category, but its statistics still paint a concerning picture of road safety in the state.
In comparison, Arkansas was ranked as the state with the fewest driving incidents, reporting just 14.7 incidents per 1,000 drivers. This stark contrast highlights the variations in road safety across the country.
The LendingTree study underscores the ongoing challenges in improving road safety, particularly in states like North Carolina, where traffic-related incidents continue to be a significant concern.
