VADODARA, India – Dr. Chandarana Dental Museum, Asia’s first museum dedicated to dental health education, has earned a place in the prestigious Guinness World Records with not one, but two remarkable achievements.
Located in Vadodara, Gujarat, the private museum holds the world record for the largest collection of toothbrushes and the largest display of toothbrushes. Established in 2016 by Dr. Yogesh Chandarana, the museum has become an educational hub, housing an impressive collection of 2,371 toothbrushes and 26 distinct displays. The museum’s toothbrush collection includes a variety of unique items, such as traditional datun (a natural toothbrush), 19th-century toothbrushes made from bone and animal hair, and more modern designs.
Dr. Yogesh Chandarana, the museum’s founder, holds the record for the largest toothbrush collection, while the entire Chandarana family has been recognized for the largest display. Prior to this, the Guinness World Record for the largest toothbrush collection was held by a Canadian girl with 1,678 toothbrushes. In addition to toothbrushes, the museum features a wide range of historical dental artifacts, providing a fascinating look at the evolution of dental care.
Reflecting on the museum’s creation, Dr. Yogesh Chandarana shared how his vision took shape. “There are many museums, but the concept of this one was completely new,” he explained. After working at SSG Hospital in Vadodara and visiting a museum in America called ‘House on the Rocks’, I thought, if one person could create a museum of diverse items, why couldn’t I create a museum dedicated to dental products?” This idea, born in 2013, culminated in the opening of the museum in 2016.
Dr. Chandarana’s initial collection began with just 500 toothbrushes. However, as the collection grew, it attracted global attention. “When my son came with a dentist, he said, ‘Papa, there are so many toothbrushes!’ I thought, if we add a few more, we could break the record,” he said. The museum eventually recorded 2,371 toothbrushes, earning the title of the world’s largest toothbrush collection and display.
Dr. Pranav Chandarana, Dr. Yogesh’s son, elaborated on the museum’s expansive collection. “We started with around 2,000 to 3,000 dental-related items, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, old dental instruments, and even matchbox labels with dental advertisements,” he said. “Recently, we achieved recognition from the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records, as well as two Guinness World Records for the largest collection and display of toothbrushes.”
In addition to its record-breaking achievements, the museum provides cutting-edge dental health services. The museum features augmented reality animations that educate children on dental hygiene in an engaging way. It also boasts animatronic dental orchestras and health shows, offering interactive learning experiences. Furthermore, visitors can use AI-powered technology for quick dental check-ups. By simply taking three photos, visitors receive a detailed dental health report sent directly to their mobile devices within 30 to 40 seconds.
Patients often contribute to the museum’s growing collection of toothbrushes, with many visitors donating items from their travels. “As people learn about our museum, they often bring us toothbrushes from various parts of the world, adding to our collection,” said Dr. Pranav Chandarana. “Our toothbrush collection spans over 150 to 200 years, showcasing the development of dental care throughout history.”
The Dr. Chandarana Dental Museum not only offers a unique insight into the history of dentistry but also provides modern, high-tech solutions for dental care, making it a vital resource for both education and treatment. With its new world records, the museum has solidified its place as a trailblazer in dental history and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the evolution of dental care.
