MELBOURNE — Several ATP stars have embraced their roles as philanthropists in 2024, launching foundations and supporting charitable causes alongside their tennis careers. Players such as Carlos Alcaraz, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and others have used their platform to raise funds and create positive change for those in need.
In March, Andrey Rublev launched the Andrey Rublev Foundation, which aims to support children battling critical illnesses. The foundation’s primary goal is to provide resources and financial assistance to help these children overcome challenges, empowering them to reach their full potential. Rublev also introduced a clothing line, Play for the Kids, in December 2023. The collection raised over $150,000 in its initial months, which served as the foundation’s starting funding.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to help children in need,” Rublev said. “This is just the beginning of a long-term effort to make a real impact in the lives of these young people.”
In April, Carlos Alcaraz followed in Rublev’s footsteps, establishing the Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Foundation. Focused on improving the lives of disadvantaged children, the foundation is based in Alcaraz’s hometown of El Palmar and is dedicated to providing support and creating opportunities for children facing hardships. One of its early successes includes social sports initiatives that have already reached over 120 children, fostering equal opportunities through sports.
“I believe athletes have a responsibility to give back, especially when it comes to helping children,” Alcaraz stated. “We’re taking small steps, but they are meaningful and will make a lasting difference.”
Casper Ruud, currently ranked No. 6 in the ATP rankings, has also made significant contributions off the court. As Global Ambassador for the W Initiative, a humanitarian organization focused on improving the lives of children and young people from diverse backgrounds, Ruud participated in the initiative’s annual tennis event in Oslo in September. The event raised 1 million NOK ($95,000 USD) for Furuset IF Tennis, an organization that aligns with the W Initiative’s mission of expanding opportunities for youth.
“I’ve seen the remarkable sporting achievements here, but after today, I have a deeper understanding of the vital work being done with young people,” Ruud said during the event.
Other players have also demonstrated their commitment to charitable causes in 2024. Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter volunteered at the Miami Open Unites event, where they joined fellow players Hubert Hurkacz, Holger Rune, and Alexander Zverev in helping a local rescue mission. The group participated in planting seeds for food donations to help those in need.
In addition, Hurkacz made a generous gesture by donating €100 for each ace he hit between September and November to aid victims of the devastating floods in Poland. Meanwhile, doubles specialist Marcus Daniell pledged 50% of his 2024 prize money to charity. As the founder of High Impact Athletes, Daniell is dedicated to guiding athletes toward the most effective charitable causes.
Dominic Thiem was also recognized this week for his humanitarian efforts, winning the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award for his ongoing work in climate and animal welfare.
The collective efforts of these players highlight the growing trend of athletes using their platform for good, inspiring others in the sport and beyond to make a difference in the world.
