BEIJING — China has approved plans for the world’s largest hydroelectric dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, a project that is poised to become the most expensive infrastructure development in the world.
Referred to as the “Everest of rivers” due to its extreme topography, the Yarlung Tsangpo is renowned for its dramatic geography. In one section, the river plunges 2,000 meters over a 50-kilometer stretch (31 miles), creating a challenging environment for construction. However, the river’s vast hydropower potential has captured the attention of Chinese officials.
On December 25, Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, announced that the Chinese government had officially approved plans to construct the massive hydroelectric dam on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo, which flows from Tibet into India and Bangladesh.
The project is expected to reshape energy production in the region, tapping into the river’s immense energy potential while raising environmental and geopolitical concerns. The approval of this dam represents a significant step in China’s ongoing efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity.
