Merton, a vibrant borough in south London, has been named one of the best places to live in the UK, ranking fourth in a list compiled by The Times. Known for hosting the world-renowned Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Merton joins other top contenders such as Richmond, which secured the number one spot, and Sutton, which placed eighth.
The ranking was determined using a comprehensive analysis of nine different data sets, covering factors such as Ofsted ratings, local crime rates, housing affordability, and the availability of Green Flag parks in each area.
According to The Times, 26% of Merton’s schools received “outstanding” ratings from Ofsted, reflecting the area’s strong educational performance. The borough boasts 15 outstanding schools, including seven primary schools, five secondary schools, two special schools, and one independent school. Notable institutions include Wimbledon Park Primary School and St Mark’s Church of England Academy.
While Merton is one of the more expensive areas in south London, with an average house price of £579,000, it offers a wealth of green spaces and parks, such as Wimbledon Common and Ravensbury Park. These leafy areas provide residents with plenty of outdoor opportunities. Additionally, Merton’s excellent transport links to Central London, including several train stations and two London Underground lines, make it an attractive location for commuters.
The borough also comes alive during the summer months when the iconic Wimbledon Tennis Championships take center stage, drawing global attention and a flurry of visitors to the area.
Merton’s vibrant local scene extends beyond sports, with a strong culinary presence. The Trafalgar pub, a local favorite, has earned the prestigious title of South West London Branch Pub of the Year from CAMRA six times since 2007, most recently in 2024.
Beyond The Times recognition, Merton has also been celebrated by The Telegraph as one of the best places to retire, further solidifying its appeal to a wide range of residents.
With its mix of excellent schools, green spaces, strong transport links, and thriving local culture, Merton continues to be a sought-after destination for families, professionals, and retirees alike.
