A new study by coupon codes specialist CouponPi has crowned Fortnum & Mason as the world’s best department store for 2024, based on an analysis of over 46,000 Google reviews across 50 leading stores globally. The study evaluated the average ratings and positive sentiment expressed in reviews for each department store.
Fortnum & Mason, a renowned British retailer with an annual turnover exceeding £208 million, secured a perfect 10 out of 10 score. The store received an average rating of 4.6 out of 5, earning praise for its exceptional customer experiences. Following closely behind is El Palacio de Hierro, located in Polanco, Mexico City, which scored 9.6 out of 10 with a 4.6 rating and a 57.4% positive sentiment.
The study also highlighted several other prestigious stores from the UK and Ireland. Liberty London, famous for its Tudor-style facade made from the timber of two battleships, placed fourth, while Dublin’s Arnotts, the largest and oldest department store in Ireland, ranked in fifth place. Arnotts scored a 60.9% positive sentiment rating, with customers commending its friendly and helpful staff.
Additional stores in the top 10 include Paris’s Printemps Haussmann, Singapore’s Takashimaya Shopping Centre in Ngee Ann City, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, and Le Bon Marché in Paris. All of these stores received high ratings, with the percentage of positive sentiment reviews ranging from 44.9% to 62.1%.
Fortnum & Mason, long celebrated for its fine foods and luxury products, was noted for its exceptional customer service and the wide variety of items offered, including gifts, beauty products, and accessories.
Meanwhile, El Palacio de Hierro, which operates 16 stores across Mexico, earned praise for its flagship Polanco location. The store, originally known for its striking iron and steel architecture, has since been remodeled to great acclaim. Reviewers highlighted the store’s cleanliness, spaciousness, and extensive selection of brands.
In addition to the global rankings, the report also identified the top department stores for Christmas shopping. Saks Fifth Avenue emerged as the winner, followed by Le Bon Marché, Liberty London, Macy’s in Chicago, Selfridges, Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo, Galeries Lafayette in Paris, and London’s Harrods.
The study’s findings emphasize the growing importance of customer sentiment in evaluating department stores worldwide, with these top-ranking stores standing out for their customer service, ambiance, and broad range of offerings.
