Himachal Pradesh has been recognized as the ‘Best Performer’ in the States’ Startup Ranking 2022 for states with populations under 1 crore. This recognition highlights the state’s growing presence in India’s startup ecosystem, with 144 certified startups making strides across diverse sectors, including agritech, tourism, and Information Technology.
The state’s startup ventures are driving significant job creation and economic transformation, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and competition. Himachal’s success is attributed to its proactive policies and initiatives, which have been pivotal in fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship.
Industry, Labour, and Employment Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan credited the state’s rise as a startup hub to its tailored policies that support ventures at various stages of development. These policies offer financial assistance, including seed funding up to Rs 25 lakh, subsidized incubation spaces, and grants for research and development. Moreover, the state has simplified registration processes and extended tax exemptions to further promote the ease of doing business.
Himachal Pradesh has also excelled in the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises scheme, where it has disbursed Rs 64.56 crore to 972 cases under the credit-linked subsidy, as well as Rs 50.31 crore to 13,427 women self-help groups (SHGs) under the seed capital component.
CII State President Navesh Narula emphasized that this achievement is especially notable for a small state with limited resources. The focus on empowering rural women through SHGs has been a key factor in enhancing their economic independence. These SHGs have been instrumental in producing value-added agrifood products such as organic jams, pickles, and juices, sourced from locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs, helping meet the increasing demand for organic food products.
Chauhan added that the initiative has significantly empowered rural women by providing them with necessary skills, financial support, and collective strength to run small businesses.
