Bangkok has emerged as the most sought-after destination for both Thai and foreign travelers during the Chinese New Year holiday, according to the latest data from digital travel platform Agoda.
Agoda’s report, released on Wednesday, highlights that the capital city of Thailand is the top domestic destination for Thai tourists planning to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, which begins on January 29. The platform’s accommodation search data from December indicated that Bangkok outpaced other destinations in terms of travel interest.
Following Bangkok, Pattaya in Chonburi province and Chiang Mai province secured second and third spots, with accommodation searches surging by 38% and 55%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
Agoda also observed a notable shift in travel preferences, with Thai tourists increasingly exploring new destinations. Khon Kaen, for instance, saw an astonishing 2,964% year-over-year spike in accommodation searches.
Foreign tourists have also shown a strong interest in Bangkok, marking a 70% increase in accommodation searches year-over-year. Other popular destinations for international visitors include Phuket and Hat Yai (Songkhla), which experienced 80% and 30% growth in searches, respectively.
Among foreign travelers, Malaysians continue to dominate, topping the list of foreigners looking to book accommodation in Thailand during the Chinese New Year for the second consecutive year. They are followed by Chinese and South Korean visitors.
For Thai tourists traveling abroad, Agoda reported that Tokyo remains the top destination, with a 66% year-over-year increase in accommodation searches, maintaining its position for the second year in a row. Seoul saw a significant jump of 519% in accommodation searches, securing the second spot, while Osaka, Japan, ranked third with a 42% increase.
Interestingly, Hong Kong, which ranked third last year for Thai tourists, did not make the list this year, signaling a shift in traveler preferences and a growing demand for other international destinations.
