Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. – Petrobras has achieved significant milestones in its refining operations, setting new records for the production of gasoline and S-10 low sulfur diesel in 2024. The company reported that its gasoline production reached an all-time high of 24.4 billion liters, surpassing the previous record set in 2014 of 24.2 billion liters. Similarly, S-10 diesel production broke the record from 2023, with 26.3 billion liters produced last year.
Petrobras also made impressive strides in the pre-salt region, a key area for the company’s oil production. The volume of oil processed from the pre-salt fields accounted for 70% of the total oil processed by Petrobras in 2024, surpassing the 66% recorded in 2023. This reflects the company’s growing reliance on these prolific reserves and its continued investment in optimizing production and refining operations.
Another notable achievement for Petrobras was the increase in the Refinery Utilization Factor (FUT), which reached 93.2% in 2024, a rise from the 92% achieved in the previous year. The FUT metric is a key performance indicator that considers the volume of oil processed in relation to the refinery’s capacity, factoring in safety, environmental, and quality requirements. The increase in FUT is a testament to the company’s enhanced refinery efficiency and the effective integration of its Refining, Transportation, Marketing, Petrochemical, and Fertilizer segments.
In addition to record production and operational efficiency, Petrobras also made significant progress in reducing the environmental impact of its refining activities. In 2024, the company recorded its lowest-ever greenhouse gas emissions intensity at 36.1 kgCO2 per equivalent load, the lowest since it began tracking emissions in 2019.
This remarkable reduction helped to avoid the burning of 475,000 m³/day of natural gas, as well as the emission of 365,000 tons of CO2. This reduction is equivalent to removing more than 6,000 diesel-powered urban buses or 60,000 gasoline-powered cars from the roads, contributing to Petrobras’ ongoing commitment to sustainability.
The company’s achievements in refining production and emissions reduction were made possible through strategic planning and enhanced operational reliability. Petrobras’ integrated approach, involving close coordination between its various segments, played a critical role in optimizing refining capacity and ensuring that its refineries operated efficiently and sustainably.
Overall, Petrobras’ record-breaking production in 2024, combined with its efforts to reduce emissions, highlights its position as a leader in both energy production and environmental responsibility. As the company continues to innovate and streamline its operations, it is well-positioned to meet both the growing demand for refined products and the global push for more sustainable practices in the energy sector.
