Greek potatoes, particularly those grown in the northern region, have once again topped the TasteAtlas “Potatoes” category, earning the coveted title for the second consecutive year. The Kato Nevrokopiou variety, cultivated in various municipalities across northern Greece, has impressed food enthusiasts and critics worldwide.
TasteAtlas, a renowned experiential travel guide focused on traditional foods, compiles ratings from over 100,000 food critics, travelers, and research articles, evaluating 6,119 food products and ingredients. The Greek potatoes achieved a stellar score of 4.5 out of 5 stars in 2025, slightly improving from last year’s score of 4.4, and outshined Canada’s Yukon Gold potatoes, which followed closely behind in the rankings.
The Kato Nevrokopiou potatoes are grown in several towns, including Kato Nevrokopi, Kato Vrontos, Perithori, and Dasoto, dating back to the 1920s. Thanks to the region’s favorable climatic conditions and sandy soils, these potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, starch, and proteins. Harvested in September after the summer heat subsides, they are renowned for their excellent flavor and versatility, forming the base of many traditional Greek dishes. Additionally, they are processed industrially into products such as potato flour and chips.
TasteAtlas attributes the potato’s exceptional quality to the region’s “excellent climatic conditions and sandy soils.” The high ratings reflect the value placed on this product in Greece, where it is a staple in numerous recipes.
Greek cuisine has also garnered recognition on the international stage. TasteAtlas ranked Greek food as the third-best cuisine globally last year, and this year, it reached the top spot with a score of 4.60 out of 5, surpassing Italy, which ranked second at 4.59. Mexico claimed third place with a score of 4.52. This success follows a broader trend of increasing global interest in the health benefits of Mediterranean diets, which prioritize fruits, vegetables, nuts, plant-based foods, and fish. Recent studies suggest that such diets may reduce the risk of depression by up to one-third.
In the 2025 rankings, the best-rated dish was Colombian Lechona, followed by Italy’s Pizza Napoletana and Brazil’s Picanha. The top Greek dish was Paidakia (lamb chops), which earned a notable 16th place on the global leaderboard.
These results further underscore the growing recognition of Greek culinary traditions and the country’s rich agricultural heritage.
