The critically acclaimed Netflix series Squid Game took home the award for Best Foreign Language Series at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, which took place Friday evening in Los Angeles.
Regarded as a key predictor for Academy Award nominations, the Critics Choice Awards recognize exceptional achievements in both film and television. More than 600 critics from the US and Canada contribute to the voting process. This year’s ceremony faced delays due to the wildfires in Los Angeles, which led to two postponements before finally being held.
In the category of Best Foreign Language Series, Squid Game triumphed over eight other nominees. The contenders included Apple TV+’s Acapulco and Pachinko, Amazon Prime Video’s Citadel: Honey Bunny, Hulu’s La Maquina, Netflix’s The Law According to Lidia Poet, HBO’s My Brilliant Friend, and the Brazilian miniseries Senna.
This win marks the second recognition for Squid Game at the Critics Choice Awards. Its first season made history in 2022 by becoming the first Korean TV series to win Best Foreign Language Series, also earning Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae’s portrayal of the lead character, Gi-hun.
At this year’s ceremony, Anora, a romantic comedy, was awarded Best Picture, while Demi Moore received Best Actress for her role in The Substance. The Best Actor award went to Adrien Brody for his performance in The Brutalist. In television, FX’s Shogun dominated the awards, sweeping Best Drama Series and acting categories with Hiroyuki Sanada (Best Actor), Tadanobu Asano (Best Supporting Actor), and Moeka Hoshi (Best Supporting Actress).
Despite the Critics Choice win, Squid Game did not take home an award at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards in January, where it had been nominated for Best Television Series.
Looking ahead, Squid Game has earned a nomination at the upcoming Art Directors Guild Awards. Art director Chae Kyoung-sun is nominated for Excellence in Production Design for her work on the episodes Six Legs and O X. The 29th ADG Awards will be held this Saturday.
Fans of the series can look forward to the highly anticipated third and final season, which is set to premiere on June 27.
