Porsche has claimed its fourth Guinness World Record with the Taycan electric vehicle, this time setting a new benchmark for the longest continuous drift by an electric car on ice. The record-breaking feat took place in the stunning, icy landscapes of northern Finland.
The drive was conducted under the supervision of Guinness World Records at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, located about 150 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Instructor Jens Richter, driving the Taycan GTS, completed an impressive 132 laps in controlled oversteer, covering a total distance of 17.503 kilometers in just 46 minutes.
However, achieving the record wasn’t straightforward. The team had to attempt the challenge twice due to unexpected ice track conditions. “Under the extreme continuous load of the drifting Taycan, the ice track deteriorated faster than expected,” Richter explained about their first attempt.
For the second try, the team made adjustments, using shorter spikes and taking advantage of the cooler temperatures in Lapland as dusk settled. This time, Richter successfully maintained the Taycan GTS in a controlled drift for the full 17.5 kilometers. This new distance surpassed the previous record of 14.809 kilometers.
“With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” said Richter. “And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.”
This marks the fourth time the Porsche Taycan has earned a place in the Guinness World Records. In 2023, Porsche’s Taycan Cross Turismo made headlines for covering the highest altitude difference ever achieved by an electric vehicle—5,573 meters—along the Xinjiang-Tibet route. Previously, in 2021, racing driver Leh Keen set the record for the fastest speed achieved by a vehicle inside an enclosed building, reaching 165.1 kph in a Porsche Taycan at an exhibition hall in New Orleans. In 2020, Dennis Retera drifted 210 laps in a Taycan at the Hockenheimring, covering a total of 42.171 kilometers in 55 minutes.
