The Animate Ikebukuro Main Store has clinched the title of ‘The World’s Largest Anime Store,’ as officially recognized by the Guinness World Records.
Situated in Ikebukuro, a renowned hub for anime enthusiasts, the Animate Ikebukuro Main Store stands as a beacon for otaku culture, both domestically and internationally. Alongside Akihabara, it symbolizes the epicenter of anime fandom, adorned with vibrant signs, towering anime figures, and themed cafes that capture the essence of the anime world. Now, among the plethora of anime stores that populate the area, Animate Ikebukuro has secured its place as the preeminent destination for anime enthusiasts worldwide.
The journey to Guinness World Records recognition commenced when Anime LTD, the management entity behind the Ikebukuro store, submitted an application for consideration on February 28. In a swift turnaround, by March 17, a representative from the Guinness World Records organization confirmed the store’s status as the largest anime store globally. To commemorate this achievement, Animate Ikebukuro hosted a ceremonial event at one of its newest additions, the Animate Ikebukuro Theater.
The event witnessed the presence of esteemed guests, including a Guinness World Records adjudicator, renowned voice actor Shota Aoi, and Neki Matsuzawa as the Master of Ceremonies. Joining them were Anime LTD CEO Jun Fujiki and Animate Ikebukuro Store Manager Tomoyuki Noichi. Through a live-streamed ceremony, Guinness World Records announced that Animate Ikebukuro boasts a vast area spanning 8,554.673 square meters dedicated exclusively to anime and manga.
Animate Ikebukuro has stood as a pillar of the community for four decades, but its prominence soared following a comprehensive renovation in 2023. Transforming the former Ikebukuro Health Center, the revamped 10-story store now offers double the previous floor space, featuring exhibition halls and a dedicated theater. Catering to every facet of otaku culture, the store’s offerings span across various floors: from rotating gashapon machines on the first floor, manga collections on the second and third floors, to an array of anime merchandise on the fourth and fifth floors. The sixth floor hosts anime, music, games, and trading card game battlegrounds, while the seventh floor serves as a dynamic pop-up shop space. Floors eight and nine, along with the B2 basement, are reserved for anime events and theater screenings, providing an immersive experience for visitors.
Having opened its doors in 1983, the Animate flagship store in Ikebukuro marked the inception of what would become a sprawling network of 120 stores, spanning across various territories, including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Embracing the convergence of anime and gastronomy, many Animate locations, including the Ikebukuro store, offer in-house dining experiences at venues like the Café Gratte Counter, where patrons can indulge in series or character-themed culinary delights.
In summary, the Animate Ikebukuro Main Store’s Guinness World Records accolade not only celebrates its physical stature but also underscores its pivotal role in shaping and nurturing anime culture on a global scale. As the foremost destination for anime enthusiasts, it continues to set the standard for excellence, innovation, and immersive experiences within the anime community.
