Dr. Etsuro Watanabe, at 99 years and 133 days old, has been officially recognized as the world’s oldest practicing dentist, a testament to his enduring dedication and passion for his profession.
Born on October 31, 1924, in Oshino Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, Etsuro’s journey into dentistry began at the age of 15 when he moved to Tokyo to embark on an apprenticeship at a dental practice while pursuing his education at night.
In 1944, Etsuro’s path took an unexpected turn when he was called up for military service during World War II, serving as a combat medic in China. Following the war’s conclusion, he returned to Japan in 1945 and commenced his career as a dental technician before pursuing formal dental education.
Entering dental college in 1947, Etsuro’s determination saw him successfully pass the national dentist exam four years later. After gaining valuable experience working alongside other dentists, he returned to his hometown of Oshino in 1953 and established his own dental practice, laying the foundation for a remarkable legacy.
As the sole dental clinic in the village, Etsuro faced no shortage of patients. In earlier years, he even handcrafted dentures for his patients due to the absence of specialized laboratories—a testament to his commitment to providing quality care.
Despite the demands of his practice, Etsuro found solace in his family and hobbies. With five daughters, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, family remained at the heart of his life. Outside of work, he cultivated a passion for gardening, nurturing blueberries, beans, and tomatoes—a practice he believes contributes to his longevity.
In recent years, Etsuro has scaled back his practice, operating only in the mornings since turning 92. Yet, his dedication to his patients remains unwavering, serving as a source of motivation and fulfillment.
As Etsuro reflects on his extraordinary journey, he attributes his enduring spirit to the support of his patients and the profound sense of purpose derived from his work. For Dr. Watanabe, each smile he helps create is a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy of compassion and dedication that continues to inspire.
