The Sunset Drive-In in San Luis Obispo, California, has been recognized as one of the best places in the nation to watch movies under the stars, according to USA Today. Ranking No. 9 on the publication’s list of the top 10 drive-in movie theaters in the United States for 2024, published on May 22, it stands out as the only drive-in on the list from California and the entire West Coast.
“The rise of home entertainment led to the decline of the classic American drive-in,” USA Today noted, highlighting the resilience of this nostalgic American pastime. Despite there being fewer than 400 drive-ins still operating across the country, many are experiencing a revival by converting to digital projection and offering innovative concessions.
Located at 255 Elks Lane, just off Highway 101, the Sunset Drive-In has been a staple in San Luis Obispo since it opened in 1950. It screens movies seven days a week, often featuring double features, and hosts a popular swap meet on Sunday mornings. Visitors can enjoy classic movie snacks such as candy, popcorn, and soda from the snack bar, or bring their own food.
As of Wednesday, the Sunset Drive-In was showing “The Garfield Movie” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” with upcoming screenings of “Inside Out 2” and “Despicable Me 4” announced as “coming soon.”
