The best smartphone screens are masterpieces, offering vibrant images, crisp resolutions, and exceptional brightness. Choosing the top screens among flagship phones can be challenging due to their advanced features and high quality. Here’s a list of five phones with the best screens, ranked by their specifications and performance in full reviews.
1. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is likely the best screen in any smartphone for 2024. It features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, resulting in around 505 pixels per inch. The screen boasts a 120Hz refresh rate that can scale down to 1Hz to save battery life. With a peak brightness of 2,600 nits and an ‘Extra Dim’ mode that drops to 1 nit, the display maintains excellent color fidelity. Additionally, Corning Gorilla Armor enhances protection and reduces reflections. Despite lacking Dolby Vision support, our review described it as “huge and sharp […] among the best you’ll find.”
2. OnePlus 12
The OnePlus 12’s standout feature is its peak brightness of 4,500 nits, the highest among its rivals. It also sports a 6.82-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3168 pixels, providing around 510 pixels per inch and a 1-120Hz refresh rate. These specs rival the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Our review concluded that “the OnePlus 12 can reach brightness levels that are potentially harmful, and it’s also plenty sharp and colorful to compete with the best.”
3. Google Pixel 8 Pro
The Google Pixel 8 Pro offers a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels, around 489 pixels per inch, and a peak brightness of 2,400 nits. It features a 120Hz refresh rate that can drop to 1Hz. Though not as big, bright, or high-resolution as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it comes close. Our review highlighted the screen as “the standout feature on the Pixel 8 Pro […] this bright and sharp display is just as good as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and maybe better.”
4. iPhone 15 Pro Max
The iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts a 6.7-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1290 x 2796 pixels, around 460 pixels per inch, a 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. While its specs don’t surpass the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it remains a strong contender. Our review praised it as “beautiful and bright,” although the large Dynamic Island could be more distracting than the punch-hole camera of its Samsung counterpart.
5. Sony Xperia 1 V
The Sony Xperia 1 V is unique for its 4K screen, with a resolution of 1644 x 3840 pixels, offering around 643 pixels per inch. It features a 6.5-inch, 120Hz OLED display with no notch or punch-hole interruptions. Our review described it as “one of the highest-res screens you’ll find in a phone. Color and contrast are great too, but larger panels make movies and games look better.” However, it is slightly smaller than its rivals, and customization options are limited.
While the Sony Xperia 1 VI has been released, we haven’t reviewed it yet. Its lower resolution compared to the Xperia 1 V suggests that the latter might still offer the best display among Sony phones.
These five phones exemplify the pinnacle of smartphone display technology in 2024, each excelling in brightness, resolution, and overall visual quality.
