The University of Waikato has achieved a significant milestone by securing the third position in New Zealand’s university rankings, according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds rankings.
This advancement places Waikato University behind only the University of Auckland and the University of Otago, surpassing institutions such as Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University in Palmerston North. Additionally, Waikato has climbed to 235th place globally, up from its previous position at 250th.
Vice-Chancellor Neil Quigley attributed the university’s success to its ability to deliver an exceptional student experience without compromising academic excellence.
Quigley stated, “We are a research-intensive university, but we’re also committed to learner and student success.” He emphasized that Waikato University excelled in Quacquarelli Symonds’ metrics of research performance, particularly in citations per academic staff member, as well as sustainability.
For the third consecutive year, Waikato has secured the top spot in New Zealand for citations per staff member, a testament to its strong research culture and impact. Quigley highlighted the university’s broad approach to sustainability, encompassing environmental research, indigenous studies, and engagement with Māori and Pasifika communities.
Regarding the ranking process, Quigley acknowledged its complexity, which includes surveys sent to employers of university alumni and opinions collected from a vast survey of academics worldwide.
While Quigley acknowledged that rankings are not a direct competition and cannot predict future outcomes, he expressed optimism about Waikato’s trajectory. He emphasized the university’s positive impact on the region and the nation, noting increased attention and recognition for Waikato University.
Quigley concluded, “We just do our best, and what comes out of the rankings is what comes out. But I think we’re on a positive trajectory, and for a whole lot of reasons. People, not just in this region but around the whole country, are paying more attention to the University of Waikato. And I think that’s really good for the university, but it’s also good for Hamilton and it’s good for Waikato as well.”
