A recent study by QRFY in collaboration with JournoResearch reveals that Illinois ranks poorly when it comes to gender pay disparities. The study, which utilized 2022 U.S. census data, highlights significant wage gaps between men and women across the country, with Illinois standing out as one of the worst offenders.
Methodology
The study analyzed full-time earnings data for both genders across all states, calculating the average earnings and the subsequent pay gap percentage. Rather than focusing on specific job roles, the research covered all job fields, shedding light on the pervasive underrepresentation of women in higher-paying management and executive positions, which significantly contributes to the earnings gap.
Nationwide Findings
The study confirmed that every state in the U.S. has a gender wage gap, with men consistently earning more than women. On average, men earned $61,661.60 annually, while women earned $50,314.66.
Illinois Rankings
Out of 50 states, Illinois was ranked 14th worst for gender pay disparities:
Average male earnings (full-time): $65,710
Average female earnings (full-time): $53,150
Pay gap: $12,560 (or 12.13% of male earnings)
Legislative Measures
Illinois is attempting to address this issue through legislative action. The Illinois Equal Pay Act of 2003 was amended last August with the introduction of House Bill 3129. This amendment, effective January 2025, requires employers with over 15 employees to include pay scale and benefits information in job postings. The bill aims to increase salary transparency and promote pay equity.
States with Largest Pay Gaps
Utah: $27,528
New Hampshire: $18,044
North Dakota: $14,082
Virginia: $14,053
Louisiana: $14,048
States with Smallest Pay Gaps
Vermont: $6,450
Nevada: $7,130
California: $7,496
Arizona: $7,502
New Mexico: $7,733
Conclusion
While legislative measures in Illinois aim to address the gender pay gap, the state still has significant progress to make. The new transparency requirements could be a step towards reducing the wage disparity and achieving greater pay equity in the workplace.
