Dylan Phillips, the mastermind behind this extraordinary feat, initially conceived the idea of a super-speedy garden tool purely for amusement. Little did he anticipate that his whimsical creation would catapult him into the annals of record-breaking history.
“I ended up building the wheelbarrow for fun. In a little practice run, messing about, I got 37 mph and then the question got asked if there was a land speed record for it,” Phillips recounted in an interview with the BBC. “So it was just a case of finding out that the record existed and then deciding to actually do something with this idiotic thing that I’d built.”
The record-breaking run took place amidst the adrenaline-fueled atmosphere of Straightliners Speed Week 2024, held at the illustrious Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire. With nerves of steel and a penchant for adventure, Phillips piloted his motorized marvel to unparalleled velocities, defying all expectations in the process.

Phillips candidly acknowledged the discomfort and trepidation associated with hurtling down the airstrip at breakneck speeds. “Slowing down is the issue — it’s only got brakes at the front,” he admitted. “Touch wood I’ve not come off it or had any mishaps with it, it’s just uncomfortable.”
Despite the physical toll exacted by his high-speed endeavors, Phillips exuded an unmistakable sense of exhilaration and satisfaction. “It does leave you aching after a couple of runs because it’s got no suspension and it just rattles you to bits. I feel on top of the world,” he remarked. “I mean it’s absolute nonsense really but it’s quite a nice feeling.”
