In the realm of used electric vehicles (EVs), the Tesla Model 3 and Cybertruck have emerged as behemoths, reigning supreme in online searches on Cars.com, a renowned digital hub for automotive transactions.
According to data from Cars.com, the Model 3 claims the crown as the most sought-after vehicle, boasting an average used listing price of $26,922 in May. Following closely behind is the Cybertruck, commanding attention with an average used price tag of $143,796. Notably, these figures reflect a significant gap in pricing strategies between the two models (refer to the infographic below).
The surge in demand for the Cybertruck is particularly notable considering its production output. Commencing deliveries on November 30, the Cybertruck has gradually scaled production, reaching milestones of 1,000 units per week in April and, more recently, 1,300 units per week. Tesla CEO Elon Musk disclosed this information during the 2024 Annual Stockholder Meeting held on Thursday.
Shifting Dynamics in Used Cybertruck Market:
Despite the constrained availability of new Cybertrucks and their steep asking prices, used Cybertrucks have inundated online listings. Often, these listings feature prices that surpass even the rates for new Cybertrucks advertised on Tesla’s official website. However, there are indications of a shift in this trend, with asking prices witnessing a decline in June. Many listings now feature prices below the $120,000 threshold. The rationale behind the initially inflated asking prices can be attributed to extended waiting periods for new Cybertrucks, with projected delivery dates extending into 2025.
Rebecca Lindland, a spokesperson for Cars.com, shed light on the broader landscape of used Tesla vehicles, excluding the Cybertruck. She underscored a consistent downward trajectory in retail prices since May 2023, plummeting from $46,809 to $31,799 by May 2024. This decline, she elucidated, is a result of a combination of factors, including supply dynamics and the evolving model mix, particularly with the increased availability of used Model 3s.
This data underscores the dynamic nature of the used EV market, where demand, production output, and consumer behavior intersect to shape pricing trends. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, these insights serve as valuable markers for industry stakeholders and consumers alike.
