Despite increasing competition from other spirits in the U.S. market, Scotch whisky remains a popular choice among consumers. According to Shanken News Daily’s Impact Databank, the demand for single malt expressions grew steadily from 2011 to 2021, with U.S. exports nearly doubling to reach 2 million cases for the first time.
In recent years, while the explosive growth has slowed due to the rising popularity of spirits like tequila and American whiskey, single malt Scotch exports to the U.S. stayed strong in 2023. A total of 1.93 million 9-liter cases were shipped to the U.S., representing a 14.3 percent volume decline year-over-year. However, the category’s value remained relatively stable, with only a 1.4 percent decrease over the same period, according to Impact Databank.
Among the most popular single malt Scotch whisky brands in the U.S., sales trends mirrored the larger market, with case sales down between 4.4 percent and 30.5 percent for each brand. Nonetheless, the value for top-earning brands has remained robust, thanks to highly sought-after limited editions and consistent consumer interest.
Here are the top five best-selling single malt Scotch whisky brands in the U.S., measured in thousands of 9-liter case depletions:
