Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods, recently secured his spot in his first USGA championship by qualifying as the top performer in his US Junior Amateur qualifier at Eagle Trace Golf Club. Despite a challenging start with a bogey-double bogey sequence, Charlie managed to recover and finished strong with a 1-under 71. His score was the best among qualifiers at the site, earning him the medalist honors.
Reflecting on his performance, Charlie Woods remarked, “I didn’t play great my first two holes, but I played really good for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them.”
Tiger Woods himself had a notable start in the US Junior Amateur, qualifying at the age of 14 and eventually reaching the semi-finals. He went on to win his first US Junior Amateur at Bay Hill a year later, a tournament he won three consecutive times, a record unmatched by any other player.
The upcoming US Junior Amateur, scheduled from July 22 to 28 at Oakland Hills in Detroit’s suburbs, will feature 264 players competing in 36 holes of stroke play across the North and South courses. The top 64 players from stroke play will advance to the match play stage of the championship.
Charlie Woods expressed his ambitions, saying, “The USGA means a lot to me. I want to win USGA championships and hopefully one day the US Open.” With his early success and pedigree, Charlie Woods is poised to continue making waves in the world of junior golf, following in his father’s footsteps while carving out his own path to success.
