Orica, the world’s largest commercial explosives manufacturer, has secured the top position in this year’s The Australian Financial Review Sustainability Leaders list, recognized for its groundbreaking emissions reduction efforts in the chemicals sector.
The company’s achievement stems from its successful implementation of the largest emissions abatement project in Australia’s chemical industry, specifically targeting its nitric acid plants on Kooragang Island near Newcastle, NSW. These plants, crucial for the production of explosives, have significantly curbed emissions, particularly nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas.
German Morales, Orica’s group president for Australia and the Pacific, highlighted the scale of the project, which has cut emissions equivalent to removing 100,000 vehicles annually from the roads. A similar initiative underway at Orica’s facilities in Yarwun, Queensland, is expected to further reduce emissions equivalent to removing 40,000 vehicles per year.
Known as the Kooragang Island Decarbonisation Project, this effort underscores Orica’s commitment to sustainability leadership within its industry. In addition to Orica’s accolade, other specialist awards were also conferred in various categories, recognizing innovation and environmental stewardship across different sectors.
Orica, marking its 150th anniversary, continues to expand its sustainability initiatives, including plans to increase renewable energy use and develop low-carbon technologies. The company is also involved in significant projects like the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub, aiming to produce renewables-based hydrogen for industrial use.
The firm’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond operational improvements to fostering broader environmental benefits and advancing Australia’s green energy landscape.
