Over 1 million vehicles were stolen in the United States last year, with Hyundai and Kia models constituting a significant portion of these thefts.
Six vehicles from these automakers featured prominently on the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) 2023 top 10 list of most stolen cars.
For three consecutive years, full-sized pickup trucks had topped the list of most stolen vehicles. However, in 2023, there was a notable shift, with Hyundai and Kia vehicles becoming prime targets. This trend began several years ago when videos circulated on social media, demonstrating how to steal these vehicles using just a USB cord. This method led to a surge in thefts by a group known as the “Kia Boyz,” who often used these stolen vehicles for joyrides or to commit other crimes.
Despite the automakers introducing a voluntary software update early last year to address the issue, thefts have persisted.

NICB Response and Advice
These rankings highlight the persistent threat of vehicle theft across the country,” said NICB President and CEO David J. Glawe. He emphasized that the NICB collaborates with law enforcement agencies and industry partners to deploy advanced technologies and strategies to combat vehicle theft, whether from organized criminal networks or individuals. Despite these efforts, Glawe stressed the importance of vehicle owners remaining vigilant and taking proactive measures to protect their vehicles.
The NICB reported that more than 85% of stolen passenger vehicles were recovered, with 34% being found within a day of being reported stolen.
