In a recent analysis by Allstate for its “America’s Best Drivers Report,” Denton, Texas, emerged as one of the riskiest cities for motorists in the United States. The ranking, based on data from Arity, which tracks driving behaviors via mobile device sensors, highlighted Denton’s challenges in key safety categories.
Allstate’s report evaluated the driving habits of residents in the 100 most populous cities, focusing on metrics like hard braking, high-speed driving (exceeding 80 mph), and cellphone use while driving. Notably, the data reflects behaviors observed during trips rather than drivers’ residential locations.
According to the findings, Denton ranked 93rd overall, illustrating concerning trends in hard braking (78th), high-speed driving (82nd), and cellphone handling (57th). This placement underscores ongoing safety issues on Denton’s roads, despite efforts to improve driving behaviors and reduce risks.
Across the nation, cities in the western United States generally fared better in certain metrics. For instance, cities like Seattle, San Diego, and Portland showed improved performance in minimizing cellphone usage while driving, contrasting with poorer showings in places like Providence, Rhode Island.
The report also highlighted regional trends, noting that Pacific Northwest cities such as Seattle and Portland tend to maintain lower speeds, possibly due to weather conditions like frequent rainfall. Conversely, cities in the Northeast, such as Buffalo and Albany, also demonstrated cautious driving behaviors.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, earned the distinction of the city with the highest riskiest driving behaviors overall, emphasizing the nationwide variability in driving safety standards.
The findings underscore the importance of safe driving practices in mitigating risks and promoting road safety across different communities in the U.S.
