Paris, Day 3 Finals: Canadian Star Dominates 400 IM for First Olympic Gold
Summer McIntosh, a 17-year-old Canadian swimming sensation, claimed her first Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley (IM) at the Paris Olympics on Monday evening. McIntosh’s victory marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career, solidifying her status as a world-class swimmer.
A Journey from Prodigy to Champion
At her debut Olympics, a 14-year-old McIntosh narrowly missed the podium in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing fourth. A year later, she won her first world title in the 200-meter butterfly, showcasing her talent by outpacing American veteran Hali Flickinger.
The 400 IM, however, is where McIntosh truly excels. Combining speed, endurance, and near-perfect technique, she has demonstrated her prowess across multiple strokes, with freestyle and butterfly being her strongest.
Dominating the 400 IM
In the Olympic final, McIntosh led from the start, with American Katie Grimes challenging her initially. McIntosh’s superior breaststroke allowed her to build a nearly five-second lead before the freestyle leg. Though she swam at a pace that suggested she might break her own world record, she ultimately finished in 4:27.71, securing the seventh-fastest time in history.
“I couldn’t really see anything until the breaststroke second 50, and I kind of looked around to make sure I was in a comfortable lead,” McIntosh said. “Definitely knew that I had the gold medal going into the last 100 meters.”
American Swimmers Shine
The United States continued to perform well in swimming events, with Grimes earning the silver medal in 4:33.40. Grimes, who has consistently been McIntosh’s rival at World Championships, reached her first Olympic podium after finishing fourth in the 800 free at the Tokyo Games.
Emma Weyant, another American swimmer, claimed bronze with a time of 4:34.93. Weyant improved her position significantly during the breaststroke leg, overtaking Great Britain’s Freya Colbert, who finished fourth in 4:35.67.
A Historic Victory
McIntosh’s gold in the 400 IM is her second medal of the Paris Games, having won silver in the 400 freestyle. She is favored to add more medals in the 200 butterfly and 200 IM.
