Chris Evans has once again made Marvel cinematic history by extending his record for the most feature film appearances as a Marvel superhero with a surprise cameo in the newly released Deadpool & Wolverine film.
The 43-year-old actor revisited his role as Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, a character he last portrayed in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), four years before assuming the iconic mantle of Captain America.
With eight credited appearances as Captain America and three as The Human Torch, Evans now boasts an impressive total of 11 Marvel superhero film appearances.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Evans revealed that Ryan Reynolds, who recently received two Guinness World Records titles himself, was the mastermind behind bringing back The Human Torch.
“He just shot me a text saying, ‘Listen, might be a long shot, but would you have any interest in reprising something from 20 years ago?’ I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course,'” Evans recounted.
Evans praised Reynolds’ humor and self-awareness, describing him as having a “Midas touch” that makes revisiting characters seamless. “His self-awareness makes him almost invincible,” Evans added. “He makes the joke before the audience gets a chance to make the joke.”
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Evans’s character meets Deadpool and Wolverine in a surreal setting known as the “Void”. Deadpool’s surprise and mild disappointment at encountering The Human Torch instead of Captain America add a humorous twist to the cameo.
Reflecting on his brief return to the role, Evans mentioned the ease of filming, describing it as “pretty easy” despite the logistical challenges. He also reminisced fondly about his early days working on the original Fantastic Four films, which he credits with propelling his career to new heights.
Looking ahead, a reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise titled Fantastic Four: First Steps is underway, slated for release in July 2025. Pedro Pascal, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Narcos, is set to star as Mr. Fantastic, alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach completing the superhero lineup.
