Daryl Tan, a 22-year-old Singaporean, has set an unprecedented mark in the world of speedcubing by holding the highest number of Guinness World Records titles in the category. Tan, a student at Singapore Institute of Technology, has achieved 11 records for solving Rubik’s Cubes under extraordinary conditions, including while suspended upside down or submerged underwater.
Tan’s accomplishments are featured in the Guinness World Records 2025 book, released on September 12, marking the 70th anniversary of the series. Tan’s journey into speedcubing began in Primary 6, inspired by a friend’s quick solution to a Rubik’s Cube. Over the years, he mastered various techniques, including juggling while solving and performing underwater feats.
Among his notable records are the fastest time to solve a Rubik’s Cube underwater (9.29 seconds) and the most 3x3x3 cubes solved underwater (14). He also holds the title for the fastest 100m solving of a 3x3x3 cube at 13.61 seconds.
Tan’s dedication extends beyond record-setting; he aims to inspire children to engage in activities that develop cognitive skills. He continues to challenge himself with new records, including attempts to solve a cube while in free fall, though previous skydiving companies have denied his requests due to safety concerns.
Despite having set 17 records since 2020, Tan currently holds 11, as some have been surpassed by other cubers. He remains supportive of his peers and encourages those interested in cubing to practice and overcome intimidation.
The Guinness World Records 2025 book, which includes Tan’s achievements, is available at major bookstores for $42.01.
