The Pittsburgh Penguins boast a rich history filled with outstanding players, and we continue our series by highlighting the best player to wear the number 54 in franchise history.
Only two players have donned the #54 jersey for the Penguins, and neither had extensive NHL careers. While Thomas Di Pauli played just two NHL games in 2020, we’ll focus on defenseman Alexandre Picard, who had a more notable impact during his time in the league.
Picard was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round of the 2003 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2005-06 season, but his breakout year came in 2006-07, when he recorded three goals and 22 points in 62 games.
Over the first three seasons of his career, Picard played for the Flyers before moving to various teams, including Tampa Bay, Ottawa, Carolina, and Montreal. His last NHL season was with the Penguins in 2011-12, where he played 17 games and tallied four assists.
In total, Picard played seven seasons in the NHL, amassing 19 goals and 69 points in 253 games. After concluding his time in North America, he spent several years playing in the KHL and other European leagues before retiring from professional hockey in 2019.
