Dolakha, Nov. 6 — Mingma Gyaljen Sherpa, a 37-year-old mountaineer from Bheding, Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9 in Dolakha, has set a new Guinness World Record by becoming the fastest person to summit all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters. His remarkable achievement has earned him a place in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records.
The son of the late Dorje Sherpa and Rinzin Doma Sherpa, Mingma’s journey to the summit of the world’s highest peaks began early. Raised in a family with a strong mountaineering tradition, Mingma followed in the footsteps of his father, a former mountaineering guide who was forced to retire after losing both hands to frostbite. His mother, Rinzin Doma, continues to reside in Bheding.
Mingma’s first major climb was the ascent of Manaslu in 2022, marking the start of an extraordinary climbing career. Over the course of 2023 and 2024, he conquered some of the most challenging peaks in the world. From May 2023, he scaled Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), Lhotse, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak, K2, Dhaulagiri, and Cho Oyu, completing these climbs by October 2023. The following year, he added Annapurna, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Shishapangma to his list of summits.
Mingma’s achievement is not just a personal triumph but a family legacy. His sisters—Nima Dangu, Chiring Nanga, and Dawa Phuti Sherpa—are also seasoned climbers, contributing to the family’s continued prominence in the mountaineering community.
Looking ahead, Mingma plans to take on another ambitious challenge: climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents, further cementing his status as one of the world’s leading mountaineers.
Mingma’s success highlights not only his physical prowess and determination but also the rich mountaineering heritage of his family and community. His record-breaking feat stands as an inspiration to aspiring climbers worldwide.
